Meet the Candidates… Oakfield Ward

Fiona Barrows

I moved to Frome four years ago now, knowing no-one, simply because I really wanted to live in this creative, independent, and community-minded town. It’s since become home, and I’m running for town council because I’ve been so inspired by the ways in which so many people here are working together to make this town the best it possibly can be – and I’d like to be a part of that.

I really believe in fairness and equality and would like to help make sure that everyone in the town feels included and supported, and that we are doing everything we can to build a thriving, resilient and green future for our town.

I’m also a very enthusiastic allotment-holder, really believe in the value of community growing spaces, and am always happy to chat about compost or tomatoes!

I was born and bred in Somerset but left in my 20s to ‘explore the world’. Like many people, I returned home when I started a family.   Frome feels like a town with a heart and it’s been my experience that people in this community care for each other, care for the town and are passionate about protecting and improving it.

I am standing as an Independents for Frome candidate (IfF), as I think that IfF has shaken up local politics and shown that a Town Council can improve people’s lives, rather than just being a bureaucratic black hole. I’m also driven by an awareness that not everyone who lives in Frome experiences it as positively as I do.  I want to use my professional background in leadership development and my personal experience of being a mother with young children, to make Frome an even better place to live.

In particular I would like to work with the community to make Frome a safer place for women and girls, on the streets, at home and in schools.
